LaGrange College and Emory University’s Candler School of Theology formally signed an agreement on Nov. 21, opening a gateway for LC students interested in pursuing further education in religion to earn both their bachelor’s degree and a Master of Divinity degree in six years.

In the “3+3 Accelerated Ministry Track” program, students complete 90 credits, their religion major and their core curriculum at LaGrange and then finish their fourth year concurrently with their first year of Divinity School at Emory. After the first year, 30 credits will be transferred back to LaGrange, where students will receive their Bachelor of Arts degree. They will then finish years five and six of their MDiv Degree at Candler.

The signing ceremony featured remarks from President Susanna Baxter, Candler Dean Jonathan Strom and the Rev. Dr. Jessica Terrell ’03 of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.

“It is an honor to partner with Candler School of Theology in this important pathway, not only for our students, but for the denomination,” President Baxter said. “The students who are the beneficiaries of this program will be tethered to the strong United Methodist heritage and ethos of both of our institutions. The future will be yours to reform and reshape as we educate you on that path.”

Sports

Men’s Basketball

Team plays Greensboro

The Panthers hosted the LC Christmas Tournament Dec. 14-15. The team kicked things off with a 76-66 win against Greensboro. The contest was headlined by LC’s appearance in the tournament’s championship game against East Texas Baptist, who upset Berry in the opening round to face off with host LaGrange in a winner-take-all scenario. Unfortunately, LC could not quite match the firepower of a red-hot East Texas Baptist offense as it fell 79-63. The Panthers will be back in action Dec. 29-30 when they head to Atlanta to compete in the Emory Shootout against Union College and Kean College.

Sophomore Devin Dowell was named Collegiate Conference of the South’s Player of the Week. Over three games, he totaled 47 points, five rebounds, six assists, six steals and two blocks, averaging 15.67 points per game.

Women’s Basketball

Team plays Warren Wilson

LC has been on fire as of late, winning five of the last six and outscoring its opponents by a combined 103 points in that span. Two of those dominant performances were this past weekend after scoring 100-30 and 86-27 against Warren Wilson and Southeastern Baptist respectively. After a tough 64-78 road loss at Georgia College on Wednesday, Dec. 18, the team will look to bounce back when they head to Huntsville, Alabama, to take on Alabama-Huntsville in exhibition play on Monday, Dec. 30, in their last game of the 2024 portion of the season.
